We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of lands, seas and waters throughout Australia, and pay respect to Elders past, present and future. We recognise that health and social and emotional well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are grounded in continuous connection to culture, country, language and community.
We acknowledge Māori as tangata whenua who have long served as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters throughout Aotearoa. We recognise that Māori health requires a holistic approach that considers physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing, and furthermore, that these are contingent upon meaningful connection to the Māori world, in particular, to the language and customs, culture, lands, whānau, hapū and iwi.
I have worked as a respiratory scientist for over ten years and am currently working an Advanced Clinical Physiologist–Educator at Te Whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Auckland. In this role, I contribute to professional development initiatives, train new scientists, mentor scientists in other regions, lead quality improvement programmes and supervise University of Auckland research students. I recently completed my PhD at the University of Auckland, where my research investigated the presence of expiratory flow limitation and breathing patterns during exercise in adolescents.
Throughout my career, I have enjoyed advancing respiratory science through education, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration. I have authored multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented at national and international conferences. I feel I’ve benefited from the Society’s professional community and support, I am keen to contribute in a more active capacity. My experiences at conferences and on the ANZSRS CRFS Examination Board have reinforced the importance of strong professional governance and the value of fostering development pathways for both emerging and established scientists.
As a Director of the Board, I would bring a balanced perspective combining clinical experience, academic background, and workforce education. I am interested in the business and operations aspects of the Society and am keen help drive the Society’s strategic direction. I am particularly passionate about initiatives that strengthen professional standards, promote research engagement, and support members in remote regions.
I would be excited for the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing success of the ANZSRS.
Hello, my name is Kate Hardaker and I am applying for a position on the ANZSRS board. I have been working in respiratory science for 20 years and feel privileged to do something that I love every single day. I believe we are all making a difference to peoples lives by providing timely, accurate information on their respiratory health.
I started in working in respiratory science after my Bachelor of Science and was fortunate to work with a wonderful group doing epidemiological research. I completed my PhD in physiology in 2014 where I found that the main predictor of airway hyperresponsiveness in older asthmatics is the smallest, most peripheral airways. Since then, I have done some postdoctoral research and a lot of clinical work and am the current Laboratory Manager at Concord Hospital in Sydney surrounded by an amazing team.
I am passionate about respiratory physiology, especially of the small airways and believe that this contributes a lot to the burden of respiratory illness. I am an advocate for education and empowerment of junior staff and believe that we all have a lot to learn from each other. I recently chaired the LOC for the 2025 Adelaide ASM and enjoyed the collegiality and support of the ANZSRS. I am organised, efficient and I work hard. Serving on the Board would allow me to advocate for members, strengthen engagement, and help shape the future of our society. If elected, I will work hard to represent members’ interests, grow our membership, and ensure ANZSRS remains a vibrant, supportive community.
I am nominating for the ANZSRS Board because this Society has shaped my career, and I am now in a position to give back in a meaningful way. My priority is to strengthen practical education and professional development for members, not just through conference abstracts or journal articles, but through real-world training that makes a difference in daily practice.
I hold CRFS, work as a Senior Respiratory Scientist across a large multi-site service, and lecture respiratory anatomy with Griffith University. Between teaching at university and mentoring staff in the clinical setting, I am committed to supporting the next generation of respiratory scientists and the people who guide them. I believe ANZSRS can further strengthen the workforce by offering targeted, skills-based courses, including a dedicated program for workplace student supervisors that focuses on practical, day-to-day guidance rather than theory alone.
I recently served as Local Organising Committee Chair for the 2024 Gold Coast TSANZSRS Conference, an experience that reinforced how important connection, collaboration, and shared learning are to the future of our field. I have also been involved in policy development, accreditation preparation, and standards work within my service, which has given me a grounded understanding of quality and governance. If elected, I will advocate for practical education, member-driven training, and stronger tools for those supporting students and early-career scientists, not only in large services but also in smaller labs where time and resources are limited.
I am an Accredited Clinical Physiologist (Respiratory and Sleep), hold a CRFS and currently serve as the Senior Respiratory Scientist and Senior Respiratory Laboratory Manager at the Lung and Sleep Centre, Blacktown Hospital, NSW. With nearly two decades of experience in respiratory science, I have developed a strong commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and professional development within our field. I hold a Master of Health Service Management which has equipped me with a strong foundation in both clinical practice and health systems leadership, particularly in areas of service delivery, quality improvement, and policy implementation.
My motivation to join the ANZSRS Board stems from a deep desire to contribute to the strategic direction and sustainability of our profession. I believe the Society plays a vital role in shaping the future of respiratory science in Australasia, and I am eager to support initiatives that enhance member engagement, promote research, and strengthen advocacy for our discipline.
I have led service improvements, mentored emerging scientists, and collaborated across multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality patient care. I bring to the Board a practical understanding of the challenges faced by respiratory laboratories, a passion for education and standards, and a collaborative mindset that values diverse perspectives.
As a Director, I aim to bring a balanced perspective that bridges clinical insight with strategic policy thinking. I am committed to fostering professional development, supporting equitable access to services, and ensuring the Society remains responsive to the evolving needs of our members and the communities we serve.
